Roundtable: HPS Acquisition Of Palm, And What It Means

Go to the chapel, and we'll get PUR-ur-ur-driven. ..

Welcome to the Roundtable, which is not at all in the fact table. Round Table is still a series precentral or ask a question the staff and provide their thoughts and observations. The question may be something simple, such as webOS your favorite application? Or something a little more complicated, for example, why choose the Palm into disrepair and eventually you can only talk about our favorite episode, Alf, you never know. Today, however, let's take a crack at the big news this week: HP buys Palm, and what that means?

Craig: It's a great result for HP and Palm. Only one of the most important players, such as HP can take Apple at this time. HP needs a unique phone operating system, but nothing stands out with Windows or a phone with Android. In addition, we have our first glimpse of the new product webOS compressed and saw the list of new features coming this fall webOS.

The best result will be such that HP is estimated to Palm. Sometimes we forget that Palm's phones are like our phones. Almost a year later, Palm only allowed five of the 300 amendments to be included in webOS. HP Image Pre Palm no longer as powerful as one of our Meadows: If you have concerns about the Palm with sufficient capacity for the market or a project, not fear. This is an exciting time!

Derek: While everyone was very pleased that the energy potential HPS is introduced for the Palm, I can not help but temper my enthusiasm with some fear, uncertainty and doubt. HP is a great company, they are really so great that you are the biggest technology company in the Fortune 500 (pointing to the tenth largest in the U.S.). While HP makes a lot of money to the table and the ability to significantly increase the resources and palm muscles, and security of their corporate culture. Palm will use the company to HP, but that does not mean it will be a separate faction. There is a way of doing things HP and Palm will finally respond.

Of course, I do not know exactly what HP is the corporate culture. Do not get the world's largest supplier of technology through the bad, and it is clear that whatever happens in Sunnyvale were just not working for Palm, and said the reassignment was necessary would be to understate the case. What should I worry so much influence on organizational culture as a person-centered opening in Palm. The continuation of the homebrew community webOS complete in part by necessity, homebrew developers only helped to increase webOS Palm engineers had not thought of, and helped to strengthen and relax the important members of enthusiasts. But with the support of a lot of money with HP, Palm will not have to ask the community forward. Nevertheless, I hope, but there is no guarantee.

I'm still cautiously optimistic. Or maybe I expect that HP will provide its phone division floundering worse than Palm, and I think HP will make things better than Palm HTC, Lenovo or any of the rumors the other contenders, I n 'I still have my concerns.

Dieter: It is one of those purchases, which in retrospect makes sense. It is very clear to me that HP includes two things: the field of mobile technology will be important to keep mobile devices from HP and was not well positioned in this space. It is also confirmation that the Palm (and Apple), if the right: the best for a company that works on hardware and software in the agreement. There are many unanswered questions: if it runs the Palm brand? Culture is HPs fit well with the Palm? HP has the stomach to be completely open webOS? We have two responses that did not have before, first, webOS will survive and grow, since HP is very serious to make a splash at this point and have the money to return to this intention. Second, HP is serious about reaching the plate camera slate webOS. Although I have my reservations about the unanswered questions, these answers have made me very excited.

Jason: Im so pumped to see Palm finally financial risks. Palm is very friendly and hotel developers, but little to say when Palm was in danger, would be in the stomach. Now, there is no excuse for developers not to transfer the application to webOS, Palm is not going away anytime soon. Chances of Palm have at least one new device on the path of the cycle of release of standard twelve months. I would bet on HP, but I see that development. With the acquisition of Palm, which could indicate what they like to have seen. Its obvious that Palm is aware of the competition and the announcement of a new generation of systems / equipment: Windows 7 Mobile, iPhone OS 4, Evo HTC, BlackBerry, 6, etc.

Palm has to go all out with their next high-end equipment, and taking into account the new funding, HP, Palm will. Palm will not depend on airlines, bending to their needs. Best of all, marketing has enormous potential for improvement. And do not forget the possibility of non-smartphone, which can now be equipped with webOS. The film is obvious, but personally, I would kill to see netvertible (as T101MT ASUS Eee PC) equipped webOS. Keyboards equipment, there would be no need to go still pre Pre webOS philosophy and instilled more. Honestly, would love Im with all the possible takeover offer from HP.

Jonathan: the thought first, second and third, I'm delighted. HP is a well-known leader in the United States, with a strong presence in both consumer markets and business major, a strong production partner relationship and pre-existing commitments, which can significantly against the webOS (Windows Mobile is not much of HP, in contrast to Google's Android on the HTC). The fact that HP has designed tablet (slate), and worked for the problems of equipment design, as well as a huge potential.

As for acquisitions, but in the fate and long-term culture of palm and people is not clear. For now, at least HP seems to be interested in maintaining a status distinct brand identity palm and as individuals, but some jobs redundant (eg HR, perhaps marketing, finance, etc.) will almost certainly be compromised. We also do not know if he would be willing to HP with respect to the conduct of business and opening webOS (good) service hackers. Despite the fact that Palm no longer have to depend on the whims and vagaries of the market for carriers of survival is a huge plus. I wish everyone associated with the transaction is a good time and hoping for great things in the future.

Keith: balls for HP and Palm will try to treat a child with the calf back to health. Sweet! This is my first reaction and should be for most users webOS (Heck, even the potential users webOS excited, and rightly so). Palm will have the fat wallets of effective business behind them, and the excitement of that company to start. Yes, HP is just as happy as a wind Palm Palm to be bought. The honeymoon is a time to annoy the feature that seems sweet at this time can be a problem along the line, but who cares now.

Im going to assume that the subcultures of the company HP are more stringent than the engineer-come-what kind of free-thinking companies by Palm. Does this mean that the opening very attractive and creativity that have emerged webOS (fun fact: webOS was no reason for the Palme proposed and what was in fact new) will be something like HP inhibited, it is not so cute already? The problem was, HP, Palm was sentenced to home. Elevation Partners to win it all is really impressive, so the dollar is not a matter of Palm may arise from the ashes and improve their products (line equipment) is webOS? * Shakes Magic 8 Ball * application prospects are good. It's damn easy

Robert: This agreement is significant. Acquisition of Palms Once HPS Elite Club, which is actually one of the other members are: technology group, which has deep pockets, huge amounts of IP, and the tone scale, vertically integrated approach to computing, or Full Control Development and implementation of hardware, software and services. Of course, we can say that Research in Motion uses a similar model, but only the phones (and services) and the smartphone is just one of many factors to achieve revolution in the ubiquity of mobile phones.

This is redemption, the Company, in particular, is probably the best solution for Palm. Currently there is no way Palm would be able to really compete. EEK a small (and perhaps lasting) percent market share, certainly, but it will not be able to achieve the scale necessary to affect the market significantly, continued to attack the phone, and Android Windows 7 next unit will continue to inhibit the growth of the company and one of the best mobile operating systems ever created would be relegated to a small niche not seen in the spotlight (and mobile computing in general) deserve.

Usually this has the potential to be very beneficial for our customers, but all HPS was based on the ability to participate in a culture of innovation Palm, webOS, which was the engine and the products we see today. If you are able to use effective and creative engineering vision of Palm and apply this to all the mobile operations of the Companys products, we will see the first products to actually compete with other countries in the elite club in all forms of factors.

Phil Nickinson, editor and Android Central: Someone had to buy a Palm. It was only a matter of who. HP is the right one? We'll see. Turn the sinking ship, and that's exactly what Palm is about never easy, as we saw last year and a half years. HP provides a very strong brand consumption, even the one I'm willing to bet that many of the current smartphone users do not even know, but the PDA in the game long ago. There are still many unanswered questions, the most important: Is Palm retains its identity as a business entity is HP? And Palm will give HP? Palm will be, how people react? There is a mass exodus on the road?

CEO Jon Rubinstein made it sound like he was planning was not able to make the financial situation of Palm. We need to see if HP gives Palm financial and creative freedom in this area.

René Ritchie, editor, TIPB: Unlike Derek, I would not put my money on the HP is smart enough to take over Palm. They have the resources and reach to accomplish great things, but until yesterday, were the operating systems licensed content, goods and material at once, on average. Buy Palm is a brave bold and radically changes the landscape of the phones. Palm, probably all that the entire engineering industry last year with the release of webOS, but a series of computer problems, errors and mistakes, carrier marketing paralyzed. HP has a huge bank account to establish the market, but they need to nail and carriers, equipment y. On average, not done. In addition, HP should have informed them of dumping Windows Phone to get all webOS. Palm needs a vision and a focus on the future. Safety is for the timid. He said I can not wait to see the amazing phone, and yes, the pills coming into the market next year.

Palm webOS and find a good home, and competition will be faster and better. Congratulations to the Palm and HP. To do something great.
