Intel is now redirecting resources to recruit other wireless carriers and handset manufacturers to adopt its next chip power-saving Atom smartphones called Medfield, Paul Otellini said during a teleconference Tuesday.
Intel wanted to see the smart-phone chips from the second half of this year. Otellini said Intel disappointed if the phones were not available for 12 months. He did not comment on the smartphone Toshiba pa3536u-1BRS battery companies, Intel has tried, but analysts said on Wednesday that the chipmaker could go to small regional phone manufacturers, and perhaps most phone manufacturers like LG.
Intel has been no success so far in space smartphone. The company currently offers a low-power Atom chip smartphone, code-named Moorestown, which took a few followers. Intel and Nokia last year partnership on the development of the MeeGo OS for mobile devices, but Nokia gave up OS in February to establish a future strategy around Microsoft Windows OS smartphones Phone. Phone OS Windows does not run on Intel chips, Otellini said the erosion of the partnership has forced Intel to pursue other companies to adopt Medfield.
Intel has committed many resources about Nokia MeeGo OS, but now need to restart efforts to get new customers to adopt Medfield, analysts said. It could delay the launch of the Intel Inside smartphone, but the devices will eventually come. However, the success of such devices in a market dominated by ARM processors is still a question mark, analysts said.
Intel may seek small suppliers in developing markets, Dell D630 Battery, where shipments of smartphones are on the rise, said Jack Gold, principal analyst at J. Gold Associates. Shipments of smart phones is increasing in countries like China, where companies such as ZTE and Lenovo are establishing a greater presence of phones.
"It's a partnership with Nokia is another thing that an alliance with [smaller suppliers]," said Gold. Large manufacturers like Nokia carry volume shipments worldwide, while Small vendors can offer a slowdown in the entry of Intel in the market for smartphones.
LG is a major supplier who has expressed interest in MeeGo OS and be able to adopt Intel chips Medfield, Gold said. Intel has virtually no presence in the smartphone market, and can only go up, says Gold.
When the processor comes Medfield, Intel will compete with ARM, including low-power processors for most smartphones in the world today. ARM processors are more effective than the power of the Intel Atom processor, which is calculated based on PC chips.
There is no doubt that an Intel-based smartphone will be available, but the question is whether it will succeed, said Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research. Medfield with a first-generation chip, may not be easy to Intel to make an impact in the smartphone market, McCarron said.
"It's not an easy market to penetrate and not a market, Intel has been," said McCarron.
ARM smartphones market rules and Intel is developing its fast processor for smartphones to have an impact, McCarron said. Most software is written for the ARM architecture, which was written from scratch for smartphones. Intel is expanding by the geometry of its chips for powerful PC to fit in smartphones, but it is a matter of time before Atom ARM's power consumption, McCarron said.
Medfield is performed using 32-nanometer production process, and the company will make the smartphone chips using the process to 22 nm. Reduce the geometry makes the chips faster and more power, analysts said.
But after a continual cycle of downsizing the size of the chips, Intel, Otellini said that Intel has a solid lead on the ARM computer architecture that can scale and a wider range of communication capabilities. Intel earlier this year acquired Infineon Wireless Division, and is said to take the Dell Vostro 1520 has acquired the technology from the purchase of batteries, such as 3G and 4G radio in the upcoming Atom chip.
"In terms of over ARM X86, not only in the core of everything you want, and I think all guys like to ARM. This is the basis, the total capacity of the system on a chip, the things that put around it - graphics, [communication] subsystems, subsystems and media processing of the envelope total energy with respect to performance can provide the SOC, "said Otellini.
Paul Otellini, Intel will also have a strong position in the smartphone market with support for multiple operating systems, such as MeeGo, Google's Android and Microsoft Windows OS to come. Operating systems continue to have much better cross-platform support, and it will be easier to switch between Intel or ARM arm to arm, especially with Windows.
"I would also note that the major smartphone operating systems are written in a high level, they are portable and platforms," said Otellini.
